Haunted House

Programs Used: Unreal Engine, Photoshop, After Effects

This was the media component to my Master’s thesis. The topic of my thesis was about the use of motion graphics in creating a hyperreality in theme parks. Since I didn’t have the funds to construct a theme park ride from scratch, I decided to create a life-size projection piece that would transform a “normal” house into a “haunted” one.

Why a haunted house? I was really inspired by the old houses of Savannah, GA, the location I received my MFA. Also, one of the rides I study in my thesis paper was the Haunted Mansion in Disneyland, so I wanted to create a nod to one of my favorite theme park rides.

This piece was presented at Digital Graffiti in Alys Beach in May of 2025.

Next, the invisible apparition moves into the living room on the right side of the projection. A door squeaks open, and the footsteps reappear on the floor, this time moving towards the couch. The rug beneath the couch is pushed back by the weight of the ghost as it sits on the couch. After the ghost leaves the couch, the curtains in the background blow inwards, revealing the window behind. As this happens, a specter – a tall, dark apparition with glowing red eyes – fractures in. It hovers for a beat, staring into the room or into the eyes of the audience, until the curtain flows back to its original state, hiding the apparition. As a high-pitched noise then begins to ring, if you look closely, you would be able to see a red liquid, presumably blood, begin to appear on the tops of the walls of the living room. It flows down the walls, covering the portraits, and drips down the couch. Puddles appear on the floor, appearing as if something was dragged through the blood. Once again, the house is consumed by bright lightning, and the rooms are reset, the loop starting over.

The rooms were both staged and animate in Unreal Engine. The cloth simulations were performed in Cinema4D and exported into Unreal.

In order to make the piece hyperreal, it had to be more atmospheric rather than exciting. So, most of the movement is slow-paced and almost unassuming. If you look at this video closely, you can see a ghost’s footprints on the floor that creates a disturbance in the rug. Then, the chair in front of the desk scoots out and in, as if someone has sat in it. A drawer is opened while a book from the nearby bookshelf floats down in front of the chair. Then a music box opens, emitting a creepy music score while a ballerina twirls in circles. Finally, the ghost will sit in the chair, its weight seen in the movement of the cloth, after the music box finishes its score, and the desk chair is removed from the desk. After a few seconds of this, whispers can be heard and the room is brightened by lightning, fading to white.
